Wokingham Cricket Club can confirm that Tom Hampton has stepped down from his role as 1st XI captain with immediate effect. And that Archie Carter has been appointed his replacement.
Tom has been managing a foot injury that is now expected to keep him out of forthcoming matches. Personal commitments will further compound this unavailability, and with no clear timeline yet known on his return to fitness, the full extent of his absence remains uncertain. Faced with this combination of factors, Tom felt it was in the best interests of the club to step down so that the 1st XI can move forward with clear and consistent leadership for the remainder of the campaign.
Having taken the captaincy last season and led the 1st XI to promotion back to the Premier Division, this was set to be an exciting second year at the helm. It is a cruel blow, but Tom remains a hugely valued part of this club and his influence will continue to be felt.
Archie has a long association with Wokingham, having first represented the Club in 2016. Though he spent some time away during his career, he returned last season and has since reminded everyone of the quality and consistency that made him such a valued member of the side. Having served as Vice Captain this year, he was the natural choice to provide the continuity and stability the Club was looking for. Away from Wokingham, Archie built an impressive record representing Berkshire accumulating over 2,600 runs at senior national county level.
The club would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Tom for his dedication, professionalism, and leadership throughout his time as captain. His commitment to Wokingham Cricket Club both on and off the field has been immense. Tom remains a Wokingham player and we look forward to welcoming him back to full fitness as soon as possible.
