Wokingham CC 2nd XI – 2016 Divisional Champions

The season started brightly with an opening day victory over Chiswick & Whitton 2, with a Matthew Loxton Century the highlight. This was followed by a demolition of Henley 3 by 10 wickets following a lethal spell of accurate quick bowling from Luca Wade 7-10. This took the side to the top of the league, where the team remained for the whole season. The second half of the season continued in winning fashion albeit the matches were closer than at the start of the season. However, the team got straight back on track with wins against Theale & Tilehurst and title rivals Fleet.
Promotion was confirmed with a couple of weeks of the season to spare and the title confirmed despite a defeat and abandonment to end the campaign. Batting highlights were Loxton’s Centuries coupled with the consistency of support batting from the top order, including half centuries from Cowdell (3), Reddyhough (2) and Beales (4). Special mention should go to Simon Carter who scored 4 half centuries and batted unselfishly and was denied 2 deserved Centuries through that unselfishness. The bowling honours were shared around and underlined the impact that every member of the team had in complete overall team effort, where every player contributed. The future looks bright with debuts given to players under 16 in the form of Toby Barker & Rahul Patel; watch this space.
The whole side is looking forward to keeping this spirit and momentum up in the 2017 campaign in Div. 3, where competition for places will be keenly contested.
